Harvesting your own meat! 08/19/2010
0 Comments

When I get to the point of actually harvesting my own meat, that'll feel like a true homestead!  But can I do it?

After reading a post on Urban Farm Hub about how rabbits are the "ultimate sustainable meat", I felt inspired!  I can raise rabbits....easy!  But killing them...ugh, not so easy.  Luckily my husband rose to the challenge and took a class by Brad Andonian with Abundant Acres Farms on how to harvest a rabbit.

Read my post on Simple Huis to learn about how all this started...and ended!

Book Review on Homesteading 08/04/2010

"Don't look at your current situation as a hindrance to living the way you want, because living the way you want has nothing to do with how much land you have or how much you can afford to spend on a new house.  It has to do with the way you choose to live every day and how content you are with what you have.  If a few things on your plate every season come from the work of your own hands, you are creating food for your body, and that is enough.  If the hat on your head was knitted with your own hands, you're providing warmth from string and that's enough.  If you rode your bike to work, trained your dog to pack, or just baked a loaf of bread, let it be enough....But the starting point is to take control of what you can and smile with how things are. Find your own happiness and dance with it."

Made From Scratch: Discovering the pleasures of a handmade life

by: Jenna Woginrich

I was really excited to get this book.  I had read reviews and what I liked most about it was it wasn't a reference book on living sustainably, it was a living journal on how a woman set out to experience the homesteading life WHILE continuing to work.  Which was important since many people think they do not have time to make or produce items they would normally buy.
